I'm not at all sure how to fix this in a performant way.

I probably have to make a numeric_value field everywhere - PREFS, ATTACHMENTS, whatever, and when there is an $lt etc, detect and use the other value?

cos string ops need to work ok on non-strings too?

might try out converting to numerics in db tho
