Currently pattern skin uses PatternSkinColorSettings. Big difference in complexity. This probably means that PreferencesPlugin should be able to handle color picking.

Hasn't part of this already been done as TWiki:Plugins.ColorPickerContrib

The other part of the vid that Arthur referenced is to choose a palette to set a bunch of colors at once. A huge selection of palettes is available at http://kuler.adobe.com/

As far as I can tell TWiki:Plugins.ColorPickerContrib is just a cheap Farbtastic packaged as a contrib.

I had a closer look at the PreferencesPlugin and it sounds like one can define custom format for each preference settings. Using this method I should be able to implement that color picker thing without having to change the code in PreferencesPlugin.

It would also be great to extend PreferencesPlugin to be able to have some special preference rendering when viewing them and not just when editing them. Thus we could display the color when viewing the preferences.

I published all that work as part of JQueryLibPlugin. Just install that plugin and check the link on JQueryLibPlugin#Supported_jQuery_plugins to start picking your colors

Theorically the jquery color picker could be used, but currently there is no way to let PreferencesPlugin know the type of the setting.
