Default values for RenderFormPlugin, mode="view"

I was wondering if it is possible to have RenderFormPlugin show default values with mode="view"?

I know it is possible to set default values when creating a form, but it looks a bit strange to present the user with a form that looks like:

Name:

I was hoping that the template attribute would help me here:

template

a template name for predefined attributes

undefined / template="helpdesk"

but it does not appear to. (It is not obvious to me from the documentation what template actually does - an explanation/example would be great)
