The paragraph under "Welcome to Foswiki" doesn't mention that the entire website
is a running example of the wiki software being described.

I was hoping to leave the text to the marketing types
Only members of
MaintainGroup can make the change. One small problem I guess is that the Home web is not running Foswiki yet?
I suggest something like
Foswiki is wiki software, supporting the editing of web pages in an ordinary web browser, by end users. In fact, you are viewing a Foswiki right now.
What makes Foswiki special is that it supports the embedding of active and passive macros that enhance the page content (e.g., with global and/or dynamic information) and allow end-users to build applications that store and process data in a structured manner. To find our more about Foswiki's features visit WelcomeGuest.
You're also welcome to experiment with Foswiki's features in the Sandbox.WebHome Sandbox?
A variation of my suggested text has been adoped (thanks Carlo I think?). Closing
