HTML comments in source are visible when comparing revisions side-by-side or in sequential view. For example, the source contains: 
<!--/twistyPlugin foswikiMakeVisibleInline-->

This shows up on the actual page as: 
<--/twistyPlugin foswikiMakeVisibleInline-->

Notice the exclamation point is not there as if the engine removed it so it looks like plain text.
