This is a simplified picture of the retina showing the outer retina containing rods and cones above and the inner retina with the ganglion cells below.

Some of those retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) contain a photopigment and are photosensitive. They are thus called ipRGCs: intrinsically photoreceptive retinal ganglion cells.
